Police arrest suspect for stabbing Hyogo woman
KOBE – Police apprehended the ex-husband of a 28-year-old woman on Saturday who was stabbed to death the day before at his apartment complex in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, NHK reported, citing sources of investigation.
The suspect, in his 20s and questioned by police, is said to have previously fled the crime scene by scooter to the nearby town of Nishinomiya.
Sayaka Morimoto, a medical clerk, was attacked on the grounds of the apartment complex on the outskirts of Osaka. A delivery man called an ambulance at around 8:20 p.m. saying that “a man maybe in his twenties or thirties” was stabbing the woman.
An investigative source had said earlier that Morimoto and the suspect knew each other.
Morimoto was found in the apartment’s bicycle parking lot and lying face down with multiple stab wounds to the back. She was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead, police said, adding that no weapons were found at the crime scene.
Police said security camera footage showed a man dressed in black who was not wearing a helmet entering a passage to a bicycle parking lot shortly before the stabbing and later fleeing.
Local residents and others said large bloodstains were seen in the passage, indicating that Morimoto, who is believed to be living alone in the apartment, was stabbed there.
Police believe she was attacked shortly after returning home, adding that a backpack containing her driver’s license and other items was found near the site. Previously, police said they seized a scooter with apparent traces of blood which is suspected of being used by the assailant.
The apartment is located along City Road 2, approximately 350 meters from Hanshin Electric Railway Amagasaki Station in Hyogo Prefecture.
