Japan Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea and Cake Contest

This year marks Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th anniversary on the throne, making her the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee. This is a milestone, an inspiring example of public service and a happy occasion for people in the UK and around the world to celebrate. Across the UK there will be plenty of celebrations taking place throughout this year, with a special series of events centered around the central Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend from June 3-6. During Her Majesty’s 70-year reign, the Japanese Royal and Imperial Families have enjoyed a close relationship and the wider partnership between the UK and Japan has grown stronger in a wide range of areas; from cultural and educational exchanges to trade and investment ties, and from defense and security cooperation to joint action against climate change. The British Embassy in Tokyo and the British Consulate General in Osaka would therefore like to bring the Platinum Jubilee celebrations to Japan and invite you to be a part of it.

5 Star Hotels in Japan Serving Afternoon Tea

Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea and Platinum Jubilee Cake Contest

Two of the activities we are launching are, “The Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea” and a “Platinum Jubilee Cake Competition”.

First of all, we would like to ask 5-star hotels in Japan to organize a celebration festival of “Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Teas” for a period of their choice during the jubilee year of platinum of 2022 and create a cake (or cakes) fit for a Queen for the enjoyment of your guests. As part of this celebration, each hotel must design and create a cake (or cakes) to be served during afternoon tea parties.

Second, we will hold a “Platinum Jubilee Cake Contest” to select a cake that will symbolize and be a key part of our celebrations. We would like to invite you to enter the cake you serve at your afternoon tea into this contest.

  • The cake (or cakes) must be an original creation and reflect something about the UK or the close partnership between the UK and Japan.

  • The cake must contain at least one ingredient from the UK.

  • The cake design must be original and must not have been previously submitted to another competition.

  • There are no restrictions on the type of cake (pastry/sponge/pie, etc.), but the design of the cake must be “fit for a queen” and must also be appropriate for serving at the birthday party. Queen’s birthday at the British Embassy in Tokyo. as in their own establishment during afternoon tea.

  • Each hotel is invited to create as many cake designs as they wish, but you can only enter one cake in the contest.

In return:

Upon confirmation of your participation, we will provide you with relevant materials, including the official Platinum Jubilee logo, which may be used for branded materials.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to bring their cakes to the British Embassy for the Queen’s birthday party in June, where the winning cake will be announced. The winning cake will be an important part of celebrations marking Her Majesty’s 70 years as monarch.
