Cabinet Approved Bill to Rebalance Lower House Constituencies

The Cabinet on Friday approved a bill to make the country’s biggest-ever change to the distribution and boundaries of single-seat lower house constituencies to rectify a disparity in the value of votes which, according to the Supreme Court, generated a “state of unconstitutionality” in national elections. .

Revised public office election law would include adding 10 single-seat constituencies to five prefectures, while removing one in each of the 10 prefectures, in a bid to reduce vote disparity below double level between densely populated constituencies and sparsely populated constituencies.
